Sis… let me tell you how motherhood had me in a chokehold.

My son got invited to be a member of the National Honor Society (I was so proud I could cry). But then I read the fine print: “Suit or sport coat required.” My son doesn’t have either.

I almost let him go just how he was. I mean, I just didn’t feel like going to find one. But the mama instinct kicked in, and we went shopping.

We went @jcpenney first. Prices had me in there whispering prayers. Then we went to @mens.warehouse thinking maybe it would be easier. (Spoiler alert: it was not.)

He’s not a shopper. I’m not a suit expert. And when I saw sizes like “S, R, L,” I was like what does that even mean?! Just in case YOU’RE wondering…Small, Regular, and Long 💁🏽‍♀️

The jacket I picked at JCPenney was too big. Way too big. I was about to have him out here looking like… well, let’s just say I sent the pictures to my husband since he was at work and he was like “Um, immediately NO!” My bad! In my defense, I didn’t know what I was doing!

But the sales lady at Men’s Wearhouse saw our confusion and struggle and offered to measure him.

He ended up looking SO handsome. Mr. GQ. “I’m raising a young Black man who’s walking in excellence” handsome!

It was stressful. It was expensive. It was humbling. But I wouldn’t trade it.

Side Note & Life Lesson
Being a mom doesn’t come with a manual. Sometimes it’s messy, confusing, and expensive. But we figure it out in the dressing rooms, in the parking lots, and in those quiet moments of, “Lord, help me get this right.” You don’t have to have it all together, you just have to show up. And I did that!

Some days are all about the big wins, and some days… you just be. Running errands, grabbing a little treat, hanging up my coat in the closet, and making that long walk to the mailbox — a whole journey.

Not every day is deep. Some days are just days. And honestly? That’s enough.

Growing up, the holidays came with a sizzling soundtrack: the hiss of the straightening comb on the stove. 😩 If you know, you know—the ear burns, holding your ear like your life depended on it, and the unspoken rule to keep your head still. And don’t sweated out your fresh press before Christmas dinner or family photos!

Now that I’m older, I lowkey miss those moments. 🥺 Thinking back…It wasn’t just about hair; it was about bonding and the beauty routines passed down from one generation to the next.
