How My Kindle Scribe Rekindled My Love for Reading

Let me start with a little honesty: I didn’t always love to read.

When I was younger, reading just wasn’t my thing. But in my early 20s, I worked with someone who loved books. One day, she was reading Milk in My Coffee by Eric Jerome Dickey, and the way she talked about it made me curious. So, I borrowed it. I’d read it on my breaks at work, and by the time I finished it, I was hooked. I wanted more. That’s where my love for reading truly began.

But the older I got, and the busier life became, reading quietly slipped out of my routine.

In 2018, I bought Becoming by Michelle Obama. I had every intention of diving into it, but between work and my kids’ school activities, I never even cracked it open.

I still haven’t read it.

In 2020, I bought A Promised Land by Barack Obama. I told myself I’d read it during quarantine, and I actually got through the first 100 pages… but once work picked back up, reading took a back seat again.

Honestly? I haven’t opened either book since.

Fast forward to summer 2023. I made a promise to myself: I would read again. And I did. I finished three books that summer. I felt like I was finally back! But then August came, and with it, back-to-school season, basketball practices, and life. Reading slid off the radar again.

I’d try to carry books with me to my son’s basketball games and on long car rides. I wanted to read. But something always got in the way. I’d lose focus or get distracted.

And then, my husband gifted me a Kindle Scribe for my birthday.

I had no idea how much I needed it!

I’ve Always Been a Paperback Girl

There’s just something about holding a physical book. The feel of the pages, the sound they make when you flip them, the worn corners of a well-loved story. It’s nostalgic and comforting.

But let’s be real: life doesn’t always allow for cozy reading nooks and quiet time.

Between full-time work, my son’s basketball schedule, my social life, JUST life, dinner, homework, and trying to just sit down at the end of the day, reading became more of a wish than a habit.

I’d start books with the best intentions. But they’d sit in my purse or on the nightstand for months. I couldn’t stay focused long enough to finish them.

But My Kindle Scribe Changed the Game

It goes everywhere with me. It’s lightweight, slim, and fits right into my everyday bag. Whether I’m waiting in the car at practice or winding down before bed, it’s right there.

Unlike paperbacks, it doesn’t need a light, a bookmark, or even both hands to hold it open. It’s just easy.

But what really surprised me? The percentage bar at the bottom of the screen.

It’s motivating.

Seeing “12% complete” or “1 hour, 43 minutes left in this book” keeps me going. It turns reading into a goal I want to reach but in a peaceful, no-pressure way.

I’m Finishing Books Again (And Fast!)

I finished a book in just a few days. That might not sound like a big deal to some, but for me? That’s huge.

Normally it takes me months, sometimes years (get it), to finish a book. But with the Kindle Scribe, I was reading during every spare moment I had. Not because I had to… but because I wanted to.

And now I’m on my second book and I’m halfway done already. It’s only day two of this book.

Highlight, Scribble, Reflect

Another thing I didn’t expect to love? The stylus.

If something in the book jumps out at me, a quote, a lesson, a feeling, I can jot it down right there. No separate notebook. No scrambling to screenshot a page. Just tap, write, done.

I can make little notes to revisit later, highlight meaningful parts, or mark a passage I want to journal about.

A New Chapter (Literally)

I haven’t explored all the features yet. There’s still so much I can do with the writing tools, sketchpad, and note-taking options. But even if I never used any of those, the Kindle Scribe would still be worth it.

Because it gave me back something I didn’t realize I was missing: my joy for reading.

If You’re a Busy Woman Like Me…

…who has a stack of unfinished books and a heart that wants to read but just doesn’t know where to find the time, I get it.

It’s not always about more time. Sometimes, it’s about the right tool.

For me, that tool was my Kindle Scribe.

It made reading feel doable again. And now? It’s something I actually look forward to. Whether it’s 5 minutes in the car, 20 minutes before bed, or an afternoon on the couch.

So if you’re struggling to pick reading back up again, maybe try something new.

You just might surprise yourself.
